Today saw unseasonably warm temperatures and sunshine for our first ‘harder’ white water trip of the season, from Talybont to Crickhowell on the Usk. Although comprising mainly bouncy grade 2 rapids (with a few flatter grade 1 sections), this was longer than our usual trips and included the infamous grade 3 ‘Mill Falls’ and ‘Spuhler’s Folly’ which everyone navigated without incident. Pete did a great job leading his first group trip, while Chris D, Phil M and Sam C proved they were up to the ‘harder’ trip; and Dave, Phil H and Steve had an easy day with no rescues required – great paddling all-round!
Our ‘harder’ white water trips will continue on the 2nd Sunday each month (11 Dec, 8 Jan, 12 Feb and 12 Mar), with ‘easier’ trips (more suited to white-water novices) on the 4th Sunday – except Christmas Day (27 Nov, 22 Jan, 26 Feb, 26 Mar). Venues will be confirmed nearer the time, but we’re hoping to paddle sections of the Usk, Wye and Tywi; other local(ish) grade 2 rivers; and perhaps the Barle and/or Dart in Southwest England. This year’s trips are already on the events list and Steve will be adding the New Year trips soon, so keep an eye out and book quickly – places are limited and they may fill up fast!
