‘Easy’ white water on the Usk, 22 Dec

Steve’s first trip write-up for 12 months – oops, sorry, normal service hopefully being resumed soon!!!

Eight brave club paddlers ventured out into the cold (3 degrees – snow on the mountaintops), showery, windy (50mph gusts, feeling like -3 degrees) winter weather for our last river trip of the year – and the first club white water trip for Harrison, Logan, Nat and Stef. We’d been hoping for low water conditions (to make up for the inclement weather) but the river was slightly higher than we’d ideally have liked for an ‘easy’ trip, which meant we spent less time coaching and playing than we might have done (and didn’t even stop for lunch!). Nevertheless, we made the journey from Aberbran to Brecon Promenade in just under 2 hours, with lots of bouncy water and only a couple of swims; glad to reach the warmth of our cars! Well done everyone, especially Harrison and Logan (for surviving the cold – and their first white water, in less-than-ideal conditions) and Nat (for her first ever river roll); and thanks to Chris, Dave and Steve for leading and rescues.
