DESCRIPTION:This is a ‘commercial’ course being run by Steve Rayner\, with discounted places for Brecon Canoe Club Members – previously advertised as 6 March. \n\n\n\nThe FSRT course is intended for all paddlers\, coaches and volunteers irrespective of craft or discipline choice\, and is available in either bank-based or boat-based option (or a combined course covering both). It provides training on key skills needed to operate safely and deal with common emergencies in a sheltered water environment in any craft. Candidates should be competent paddling in either kayak\, canoe or SUP (preferably all 3!) to enable them to complete the course\, although it is not necessary formally to hold a British Canoeing Personal Performance Award. \n\n\n\nThe FSRT course is a pre-requisite for the British Canoeing Paddlesport Instructor Award. \n\n\n\nMinimum 2\, maximum 6 candidates. We do have space for a few more – so please RSVP below if you’d like to attend; or let us know if you’d like to come just for individual sessions. \n\n\n\nAdult beginners / developers\, working on kayaking skills broadly along the lines of the British Canoeing Paddle Discover and Paddle Explore Awards – led by Dave J\, assisted by Peter M (when available):Andrea\, Anne\, Ian\, KevinJunior beginners / developers\, working on kayaking skills broadly along the lines of the British Canoeing Paddle Discover and Paddle Explore Awards – led by Olly\, assisted by Mike S and Tanya or Peter M (as available):Fleur\, Ruan\, Sam\, Seren (TBC)Teen / adult performance training\, fitness and skills with a bit of polo training thrown in – led by Steve: NB we’re intending to use polo or slalom boats predominantly for these sessions\, so that everyone can keep up at a similar pace – so if you’d prefer to use your own plastic boat you might need to be prepared to work just that bit harder than everyone else!!Caitlin\, Edith\, Jim\, Mike\, Natalie\, Rhiannon\, Sam C\n\n\n\nVenue\n\n\n\nBrecon Promenade – meet by the Club’s store adjacent to the toilet block in the ‘upper’ car park (https://what3words.com/tigers.loitering.bandage) – NOT in the car park next to the river / boathouse (although some of us might end up operating from there). \n\n\n\nTimes\n\n\n\nMeet at 6.30pm\, ready in your paddling clothes. We want to have everyone kitted-up and getting on the water by 7pm\, so late arrival has quite a disruptive effect! \n\n\n\nWe’ll aim to be getting off the water around 8.15-8.30am\, before it gets dark. \n\n\n\nParents or other adults must be available at the start and end of the session to help under-18s with kit and to carry boats; and throughout the session in case they need to get off the water early. \n\n\n\nFacilities\n\n\n\nThere are no indoor changing facilities on site\, so it’s a case of changing in the car park. Toilets may be open\, but possibly only until 7pm – and they cost 20p to get in. \n\n\n\nCost\n\n\n\n£8 per session\, or £18 for 3 block-booked sessions (9\, 16\, 23 May – no refunds for missed sessions) – we’ll collect this by Direct Debit through our membership system. \n\n\n\nAll existing Club members must also have up-to-date membership of both the Club and Canoe Wales – we’ll send separate reminders for those of you who need these! Any new members will need to register with us but don’t need to join formally for this first block of sessions. \n\n\n\nEquipment and Clothing\n\n\n\nWe’ll provide boats\, paddles\, buoyancy aids\, helmets and spray-decks for those who need them – but if you have your own\, please bring them alongAlthough deliberate immersion isn’t always part of the plan (and even when it is\, it’s usually towards the end of the session) there’s always a chance of accidental capsize\, so kit should take account of this (and the general weather conditions).At the very least\, wear clothing layers of the type you might wear to go walking – ideally synthetic materials that stay warm and don’t get too heavy when wet. Most people wear swimwear underneath. And a waterproof jacket (to keep off the rain and mind\, rather than keep you dry if you capsize!) – we do have a limited number of canoeing cagoules\, but not enough of the right sizes for everyone.Footwear that you don’t mind getting wet\, not too large (chunky trainers don’t fit well in kayaks; neoprene wet-shoes are ideal; sandals or crocs no good as they fall off!).If you want to be assured of staying warmer if you fall in\, a wetsuit is the next step. Ones made specifically for paddling are called Long Johns (or Long Janes!) and don’t have sleeves\, for maximum mobility (worn with e.g. rash vest beneath and/or fleece above). But a standard surfing-type ‘full’ wetsuit is also fine as a starter. Again\, we do have a very limited number of wetsuits\, which you’re welcome to check-out on the first evening in case we have one that fits you…Don’t forget a towel and complete change of clothes for the end of the session\, in case you do fall in!!We’ll be sure to talk about kit on the first couple of sessions so you can get an idea of what’s out there before you commit to spending £££\, but if you do want some ideas…Good local(ish) stores to look at are Up and Under and Canoe and Kayak Store – both will offer discounts for club members on request…

DESCRIPTION:This is an ‘external’ course being run by Steve Rayner\, with a possible hefty subsidy for Club Members! \n\n\n\nHave you ever thought about becoming a Paddlesport Coach? This 2-day course (suitable for teens and above) is a good way to start!! Contact Steve to discuss suitability and eligibility for subsidies! \n\n\n\nThe British Canoeing Coach Award is an entry point qualification which offers discipline-specific pathways across all disciplines. The Award is designed for people whose core function is to coach paddlers who want to gain/improve paddlesport skills within the discipline chosen. This will include coaching beginners new to the sport\, or paddlers looking to develop their skills in the given discipline or environment. \n\n\n\nThe Coach Award content is delivered through 2-day Core Coach Training and 2-day Discipline Specific Training (22 disciplines currently available\, including Sheltered Water Kayak and/or Canoe; White Water Kayak; White Water Canoe; and Open Water Canoe). \n\n\n\nThe two-day Core Coach Training course introduces the shared coaching content that is relevant to all coaches at this level\, exploring different approaches to coaching\, understanding and enabling learning; and some core coaching skills. It is not specific to any one discipline and will make use of a variety of craft to explore different approaches to coaching and introduce some core coaching skills. The course will be a blend of classroom and water-based activity; and you will also be supported a personal coaching development plan to enable you to take your learning into practice after the course. \n\n\n\nSubsequent Discipline Specific Training will then focus on how to coach discipline-specific technical and tactical skills\, helping coaches to plan and deliver safe\, enjoyable\, progressive coaching sessions and explore specifics to help coach typical athletes/learners relevant to the discipline. \n\n\n\nCandidates need to have: \n\n\n\nFull ‘on the water’ membership of Canoe Wales / British Canoeing (etc.); andA base level of knowledge about the discipline(s) you wish to coach.

Please RSVP below if you’d like to attend all 4 sessions\, or let Steve know if you’d like to come for individual sessions.  \n\n\n\nVenue\n\n\n\nBrecon Promenade – meet by the Club’s store adjacent to the toilet block in the ‘upper’ car park (https://what3words.com/tigers.loitering.bandage) – NOT in the car park next to the river / boathouse (although some of us might end up operating from there). \n\n\n\nTimes\n\n\n\nMeet at 6.30pm\, ready in your paddling clothes. We want to have everyone kitted-up and getting on the water by 7pm\, so late arrival has quite a disruptive effect! \n\n\n\nWe’ll aim to be getting off the water around 8.15-8.30am\, before it gets dark. \n\n\n\nParents or other adults must be available at the start and end of the session to help under-18s with kit and to carry boats; and throughout the session in case they need to get off the water early. \n\n\n\nFacilities\n\n\n\nThere are no indoor changing facilities on site\, so it’s a case of changing in the car park.
