SUMMARY:Sun 24 Dec 2023 'Easier' White Water Trip
DESCRIPTION:Already booked by virtue of registering for IWWS course: MelCurrently registered for WWA assessment in due course: Lee\, Mel \n\n\n\nThis will be the third of our ‘easier’ white water trips this winter\, aimed at our less-experienced paddlers who would like to gain white water skills and experience\, while also suitable for existing white water paddlers who just want to get out on the water (other provisional dates are 28 Jan\, 25 Feb\, 24 Mar – although some of these may change\, dependent on dates of polo tournaments yet to be confirmed). \n\n\n\nThese trips will be suitable for anyone aged 14+ who can paddle at least 5km under control on a moving river\, who is confident capsizing\, and who has the stamina and clothing for cold water paddling! \n\n\n\nThe aim is for these trips to get progressively harder throughout the winter\, starting on ‘gentle’ grade 1-2 rivers (possibly with the odd grade 3 section that can be walked-around) and moving up to more demanding grade 2 rivers with sections of grade 3 (which can all be walked-around) – with appropriate coaching to help everyone develop their skills and confidence. Most of the trips will be in South Wales\, although at least one of the later ones is likely to be further afield. \n\n\n\nVenues will be decided nearer the time – once we know who’s coming and have an idea of water conditions. Timings are likely to be 0930-1500 (or thereabouts) ‘at the river’. \n\n\n\nWe are intending to include on this trip training towards: \n\n\n\n\nthe new Introduction to White Water Safety course – if you completed our ‘swimming practice’ on the 22 Oct & 26 Nov trips and can attend on 24 Dec\, it’s not too late to ‘get a ticket’ to register for this award…\n\n\n\nthe White Water Award\, which is “designed to develop your ability to apply appropriate decision-making skills for a safe day out white water paddling [in kayaks on rivers up to grade 2]” (see 01112018BCABWhiteWaterAwardV1-1Nov21.pdf for detail). Training towards this award will continue throughout the winter’s ‘easier’ trips (alongside rolling clinics in the pool!) and candidates can choose to be assessed when they feel ready (you do need to be able to roll\, on flat water!). NB there is a registration fee of £25 for anyone choosing to be assessed for this award\, to cover certification costs; this can be paid later\, but anyone registering now will have a priority place on trips.\n\n\n\n\nBooking details to follow in due course…

SUMMARY:Mon 8 Jan 2024 Pool Session (General Training)
DESCRIPTION:***Scroll down for booking process and tickets*** \n\n\n\nOur next block of general training sessions will start on Mon 8 Nov and will run on the following weeks – please note this is not a fixed pattern of consecutive or alternate weeks\, because polo training will take place in the intervening weeks\, to fit in with scheduled tournament dates: \n\n\n\n\n8 Jan\, 29 Jan\, 5 Feb\, 19 Feb\, 18 Mar\n\n\n\n\nSessions will run from 7.15 to 9pm\, including a 15min ‘buffer’ at the start and finish to get equipment in and out of the pool (i.e. an hour-and-a-quarter actually in the pool). \n\n\n\nWe’re currently expecting the following paddlers (those in Bold have paid!) and do have space for a few more: \n\n\n\n\nYouth Development (led by Sam C): TBC\n\n\n\n‘Intensive’ coaching and individual practise (esp. for those who need to develop their skills with rolling and support strokes or to develop their confidence with capsizing; led by Dave\, Simon & Steve R\, supported by Tanya & Sam H): Adam\, Anne\, Fleur\, Jack\, Laura\, Lee\, Mark T (not 8th)\, Mel (not 8th)\, Natalie (dates TBC)\, Sarah (not 8th)\n\n\n\nIndependent practice: Mike B\n\n\n\n\nThe cost of each session will be £13 but we are able to offer a discounted rate of £50 if you ‘block-book’ all 5 sessions in advance (no refunds for missed sessions) – and all paddlers will need to be paid-up members of the Club and of Canoe Wales (and signed-up to our NEW Club Code of Conduct). Priority spaces will be given to block-bookings. NB this discounted rate will make it difficult for us to cover our costs\, so we will also offer the option of paying the ‘full’ price even for block-booked sessions\, for those that feel able to contribute a little extra… \n\n\n\nArrival & Changing\n\n\n\n\nPlease arrive in time to be changed and ready to enter poolside for 7.15pm.\n\n\n\nPlease wear T-shirts as well as swimwear (for warmth as well as modesty!).\n\n\n\nMake your way straight to the changing rooms – there is no need to check-in at reception.\n\n\n\nPlease wait at the changing room exits before going poolside – we’ll need to be given the ‘all-clear’ that the previous group has left before we enter.\n\n\n\nFeel free to bring your own boats & paddles – as long as they’re clean. Deposit them by the external doors in the car park before the start of the session.\n\n\n\n\nOn Poolside\n\n\n\n\nParents are welcome on poolside to help children carry boats and get kitted-up\, also to help them empty boats if required during the session (we’ll show you how!). You might even be able to help in the water\, if this is something you’d be willing to do – in which case\, come prepared with swimwear!\n\n\n\nNo outdoor shoes on poolside please.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking Process\n\n\n\nTo confirm places\, please use the ‘get tickets’ button at the bottom of the events listing: \n\n\n\n\nYou will be asked to login to your membership account on our website. All our paid-up members should have received an e-mail explaining how to do this\, but if you’re not sure of your login details (or aren’t yet a paid-up member)\, please drop us an email…\n\n\n\nIf the system says there are no tickets available of the type you want\, please drop us an e-mail as we might be able to release more\n\n\n\nYou can at present pay only by card via a PayPal ‘gateway’. If this doesn’t work for you\, please drop us an e-mail and we’ll find a workaround for other payment methods (with apologies for any inconvenience)

SUMMARY:Sun 14 Jan 2024 'Harder' White Water Trip
DESCRIPTION:The aim is for these ‘harder’ trips to be on a variety of grade 3-4 rivers – suitable only for experienced white-water paddlers who are comfortable on grade 2(3)\, preferably able to roll\, and ready to move up to something ‘harder’ – although we will not be able to confirm locations (or max group size) until a few days beforehand\, when we have an idea of expected water levels. \n\n\n\nAt this stage we’re booking only ‘expressions of interest’ and will offer places on a first-come\, first-served basis (subject to your suitability for the finalised trip).

SUMMARY:Sat 23 Mar 2024 British Canoeing Awarding Body Paddlesport Safety & Rescue Course
DESCRIPTION:This is a commercial course being run by Steve\, discounted places may be available to BCC members\, depending on numbers. More details from Steve or via his website (‘more info’ button below). \n\n\n\nThe British Canoeing Awarding Body (BCAB) Paddlesport Safety & Rescue course aims to provide paddlers with the key safety and rescue skills required to operate safely and to be able to deal with common problems in a sheltered water environment. The course is designed for all paddlers irrespective of their chosen craft. The objective is to introduce\, explore and practise simple strategies and safe skills that can provide you with the tools to solve common paddling issues. \n\n\n\nThe Paddlesport Safety & Rescue course is a pre-requisite for the British Canoeing Awarding Body Paddlesport Instructor Award. \n\n\n\nNB we will aim to arrange a Zoom meeting one evening 7-9pm before this course to run through some of the introductory and ‘theoretical’ elements.

SUMMARY:Mon 8 Apr 2024 Summer Training - Social Paddle
DESCRIPTION:Apologies for the short notice\, Steve’s been somewhat busy since Christmas so only just managing to keep up with what-should-be ‘routine’ Club administration\, so… \n\n\n\n…our first Monday evening outdoor foray after Easter will be a ‘social paddle’ on the river at Brecon Promenade – come along and join us but don’t expect any structured coaching; we’ll dust-off our river kit and go for a paddle to the rapids and back. \n\n\n\nPlease RSVP or Get Tickets (or e-mail us with requests) by 9pm Sun 7th\, so we know who to expect. \n\n\n\nDetails for subsequent weeks to follow in due course… \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue\n\n\n\nBrecon Promenade – meet by the Club’s store adjacent to the toilet block in the ‘upper’ car park (https://what3words.com/tigers.loitering.bandage) – NOT in the car park next to the river / boathouse (although some of us might end up operating from there). \n\n\n\nTimes\n\n\n\nMeet at 6.30pm\, ready in your paddling clothes. We want to have everyone kitted-up and getting on the water by 7pm\, so late arrival has quite a disruptive effect! \n\n\n\nWe’ll aim to be getting off the water around 8pm\, before it gets dark. \n\n\n\nParents or other adults must be available at the start and end of the session to help under-18s with kit and to carry boats; and throughout the session in case they need to get off the water early. \n\n\n\nFacilities\n\n\n\nThere are no indoor changing facilities on site\, so it’s a case of changing in the car park. Toilets may be open but only until 7pm – they cost 20p to get in. \n\n\n\nCost\n\n\n\n\nNo cost if you bring your own boat & kit (although donations welcomed to help us cover costs)\n\n\n\n£5 to hire club boat & kit (kayaks only for this session)\n\n\n\nAll existing Club members must also have up-to-date membership of both the Club and Canoe Wales – we’ll send separate reminders for those of you who need these! Any new members will need to join formally after their first three sessions.\n\n\n\n\nEquipment and Clothing\n\n\n\n\nWe’ll provide boats\, paddles\, buoyancy aids\, helmets and spray-decks for those who need them – but if you have your own\, please bring them along\n\n\n\nAlthough deliberate immersion isn’t always part of the plan (and even when it is\, it’s usually towards the end of the session) there’s always a chance of accidental capsize\, so kit should take account of this (and the general weather conditions).\n\n\n\nAt the very least\, wear clothing layers of the type you might wear to go walking – ideally synthetic materials that stay warm and don’t get too heavy when wet. Most people wear swimwear underneath. And a waterproof jacket (to keep off the rain and wind\, rather than keep you dry if you capsize!) – we do have a limited number of canoeing cagoules\, but not enough of the right sizes for everyone.\n\n\n\nFootwear that you don’t mind getting wet\, not too large (chunky trainers don’t fit well in kayaks; neoprene wet-shoes are ideal; sandals or crocs no good as they fall off!).\n\n\n\nIf you want to be assured of staying warmer if you fall in\, a wetsuit is the next step. Ones made specifically for paddling are called Long Johns (or Long Janes) and don’t have sleeves\, for maximum mobility (worn with e.g. rash vest beneath and/or fleece above). But a standard surfing-type ‘full’ wetsuit is also fine as a starter. Again\, we do have a very limited number of wetsuits\, which you’re welcome to check-out on the first evening in case we have one that fits you…\n\n\n\nDon’t forget a towel and complete change of clothes for the end of the session\, in case you do fall in!!
