SUMMARY:Sun 8 Oct 2023 'Harder' White Water Trip
DESCRIPTION:This will now be a trip to Cardiff International White Water Centre. If you’d like to join us\, please ‘get tickets’ using the links below by 5pm Tuesday 3 Oct – we’ll then book our paddlers in to the centre ‘en-masse’\, to save everyone booking individually (after which you will receive an e-mail from the centre asking you to complete an online medical form and disclaimer). Choose to attend one or both of these sessions (separate tickets needed for each): \n\n\n\n\n10:00-12:30 running at 4 cumecs (10:00-11:30) then 6 cumecs (11:30-12:30)\n\n\n\n13:30-16:00 running at 8 cumecs – suitable only for those paddlers already comfortable on the course at 6 cumecs\n\n\n\n\nThis trip is for existing white water paddlers only\, if you’re not sure of your suitability please check first with Steve (and/or check out the information at Park & Play (ciww.com)). We will be able to lead and/or coach those who need or want this\, others (over 18) may choose to ‘peer paddle’ under their own steam (and under 18s if their parents are also present). \n\n\n\nWe’ll aim to coordinate transport sharing once we know who’s coming… \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis will be the first of our ‘harder’ white water trips this winter – suitable only for experienced white-water paddlers who are comfortable on grade 2(3)\, preferably able to roll\, and ready to move up to something ‘harder’. \n\n\n\nThe aim is for these trips to be on a variety of grade 3-4 rivers\, led by a suitably qualified leader / coach\, although we will not be able to confirm locations until a few days beforehand\, when we have an idea of expected water levels. \n\n\n\nConsequently\, participants should be prepared to travel up to 3 hours each way (although we’ll aim for less than this) – and to share lifts and costs. \n\n\n\nNumbers will be limited\, so if you’d like to join this trip\, please RSVP using the button below or drop Steve an e-mail. Club boats will be available for £10 hire as usual\, although we anticipate most of our ‘hard’ paddlers having their own boats.

SUMMARY:Sun 22 Oct 2023 'Easier' White Water Trip (with optional training elements for 'Introduction to WW Safety' and 'White Water' Awards)
DESCRIPTION:This will be the first of our ‘easier’ white water trips this winter\, aimed at our less-experienced paddlers who would like to gain white water skills and experience\, while also suitable for existing white water paddlers who just want to get out on the water! \n\n\n\nThese trips will be suitable for anyone aged 14+ who can paddle at least 5km under control on a moving river\, who is confident capsizing\, and who has the stamina and clothing for cold water paddling! \n\n\n\nThe aim is for these trips to get progressively harder throughout the winter\, starting on ‘gentle’ grade 1-2 rivers (possibly with the odd grade 3 section that can be walked-around) and moving up to more demanding grade 2 rivers with sections of grade 3 (which can all be walked-around) – with appropriate coaching to help everyone develop their skills and confidence. Most of the trips will be in South Wales\, although at least one of the later ones is likely to be further afield. \n\n\n\nVenues will be decided nearer the time – once we know who’s coming and have an idea of water conditions. Timings are likely to be 0930-1500 (or thereabouts) ‘at the river’. \n\n\n\nWe are intending to include on this trip (if there is sufficient demand) training towards: \n\n\n\n\nthe new Introduction to White Water Safety course\, which is “designed to support paddlers [in kayak or canoe] to become effective group members in a moderate white water (grade 2) environment; suitable for anyone starting out on their white water paddling journey\, wanting to explore the role of an effective group member and learn simple strategies and safe skills that can provide the tools to solve common paddling issues” (see Introduction to White Water Safety (britishcanoeingawarding.org.uk) for more detail). The remaining elements of this course will be covered on the following 2 ‘easier’ trips – on 26 Nov and 24 Dec (although we could move this to 17 Dec if that worked better for everyone) – and candidates will need to attend all 3 trips to complete the award. NB there is a registration fee of £25 for this course (in addition to craft hire\, if required)\, to cover certification costs – and participants on this course may have an earlier start and/or later finish than those just wishing to ‘run the river’.\n\n\n\nthe White Water Award\, which is “designed to develop your ability to apply appropriate decision-making skills for a safe day out white water paddling [in kayaks on rivers up to grade 2]” (see 01112018BCABWhiteWaterAwardV1-1Nov21.pdf for detail). Training towards this award will continue throughout the winter’s ‘easier’ trips (alongside rolling clinics in the pool!) and candidates can choose to be assessed when they feel ready (you do need to be able to roll\, on flat water!). NB there is a registration fee of £25 for anyone choosing to be assessed for this award\, to cover certification costs; this can be paid later\, but anyone registering now will have a priority place on trips.\n\n\n\n\nBook places NOW using the ‘get tickets’ and ‘RSVP’ links. Places will be strictly limited and priority will be given to (a) candidates registering for the IWWS course; and (b) the WWA course (you can book for one or both!); followed by (b) other ‘less-experienced’ paddlers (especially those who’ve already expressed an informal interest to Steve); then (c) experienced white-water paddlers. For this reason\, places will be released by ‘drip-feed’\, so if the trip appears to be ‘full’ or ‘closed’\, do check with Steve in case he’s keeping places up his sleeve! Also\, if you’re not sure whether this trip – or the course(s) – are suitable for you\, please check with Steve before booking.

SUMMARY:Mon 6 Nov 2023 Pool Session (General Training)
DESCRIPTION:***Scroll down for booking process and buttons for tickets and expressions of interest*** \n\n\n\nNB we may not have spaces for everyone who wants to attend these sessions and we will be releasing ‘tickets’ in phases\, so please book quickly to reserve your place(s). We are currently taking bookings for: \n\n\n\n\n3-session block-booking for ‘independent practice’\, for those who don’t need much coaching support (e.g. to practise rolling alone or in groups) – no specific limit on numbers;\n\n\n\n3-session block-booking for ‘rolling clinics’ to learn\, improve or practise the art of kayak rolling (for teenagers & adults) – numbers limited by coach availability; and\n\n\n\nExpressions of interest for ‘skills for developing kayakers’ (those aged 11-14; and other ‘novice’ paddlers) – whether this runs will depend on coach availability and numbers in the other groups\, so we can’t guarantee spaces at this stage and may have to disappoint some of you – sorry!\n\n\n\n\nIf you’re not sure where you ‘fit’\, either use the RSVP button to ‘express interest’\, or drop us an e-mail and we’ll confirm in due course… \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur next block of general training sessions will start on Mon 6 Nov and will run on alternate weeks: 6 Nov\, 20 Nov\, 4 Dec. Polo training will take place in the intervening weeks; and the scheduled session on 18 Dec is likely to be a ‘special’ session for an invited group – details to follow… \n\n\n\nSessions will run from 7.15 to 9pm\, including a 15min ‘buffer’ at the start and finish to get equipment in and out of the pool (i.e. an hour-and-a-quarter actually in the pool). \n\n\n\nWe’re currently expecting the following paddlers (those in Bold have paid!) AND NOW HAVE NO SPACE FOR MORE: \n\n\n\n\nYouth Development (led by Dave): Asher\, Finn\, Gethyn\, Lily\, Rhys\, Seth\n\n\n\nRolling Clinic (led by Steve R\, Tanya and Pete M TBC): Edith\, Fleur\, Jonathan\, Lauren\, Lee\, Mel\, Nairi\, Natalie\, Sam C\, Sarah – we will split into smaller groups and will endeavour to give coaching support to everyone – with those most in need getting the most support and others practising together in small groups where appropriate\n\n\n\nIndependent practice: Mike B \n\n\n\n\nThe cost of each session will be £13 but we are able to offer a discounted rate of £30 if you ‘block-book’ 3 sessions in advance (no refunds for missed sessions) – and all paddlers will need to be paid-up members of the Club and of Canoe Wales (and signed-up to our NEW Club Code of Conduct). Priority spaces will be given to block-bookings. NB this discounted rate will make it difficult for us to cover our costs\, so we will also offer the option of paying the ‘full’ price even for block-booked sessions\, for those that feel able to contribute a little extra… \n\n\n\nArrival & Changing\n\n\n\n\nPlease arrive in time to be changed and ready to enter poolside for 7.15pm.\n\n\n\nPlease wear T-shirts as well as swimwear (for warmth as well as modesty!).\n\n\n\nMake your way straight to the changing rooms – there is no need to check-in at reception.\n\n\n\nPlease wait at the changing room exits before going poolside – we’ll need to be given the ‘all-clear’ that the previous group has left before we enter.\n\n\n\nFeel free to bring your own boats & paddles – as long as they’re clean. Deposit them by the external doors in the car park before the start of the session.\n\n\n\n\nOn Poolside\n\n\n\n\nParents are welcome on poolside to help children carry boats and get kitted-up\, also to help them empty boats if required during the session (we’ll show you how!). You might even be able to help in the water\, if this is something you’d be willing to do – in which case\, come prepared with swimwear!\n\n\n\nNo outdoor shoes on poolside please.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking Process\n\n\n\nTo confirm places\, please use the ‘get tickets’ button at the bottom of the events listing: \n\n\n\n\nYou will be asked to login to your membership account on our website. SUMMARY:Sun 26 Nov 2023 'Easier' White Water Trip
DESCRIPTION:Already booked by virtue of registering for IWWS course: MelCurrently registered for WWA assessment in due course: Lee\, MelPlaces confirmed for: Anne\, Chris\, Mel\, Pete M\, Phil H\, Sam C\, Simon\, Steve R \n\n\n\nThis will be the second of our ‘easier’ white water trips this winter\, aimed at our less-experienced paddlers who would like to gain white water skills and experience\, while also suitable for existing white water paddlers who just want to get out on the water (other provisional dates are 24 Dec\, 28 Jan\, 25 Feb\, 24 Mar – although some of these may change\, dependent on dates of polo tournaments yet to be confirmed). \n\n\n\nWe are intending to include on this trip training towards: \n\n\n\n\nthe new Introduction to White Water Safety course – if you completed our ‘swimming practice’ on the 22 Oct trip and can attend on 26 Nov and 24 Dec\, it’s not too late to ‘get a ticket’ to register for this award…\n\n\n\nthe White Water Award\, which is “designed to develop your ability to apply appropriate decision-making skills for a safe day out white water paddling [in kayaks on rivers up to grade 2]” (see 01112018BCABWhiteWaterAwardV1-1Nov21.pdf for detail).

SUMMARY:Sun 11 Feb 2024 'Harder' White Water Trip
DESCRIPTION:The aim is for these ‘harder’ trips to be on a variety of grade 3-4 rivers – suitable only for experienced white-water paddlers who are comfortable on grade 2(3)\, preferably able to roll\, and ready to move up to something ‘harder’ – although we will not be able to confirm locations (or max group size) until a few days beforehand\, when we have an idea of expected water levels. \n\n\n\nAt this stage we’re booking only ‘expressions of interest’ and will offer places on a first-come\, first-served basis (subject to your suitability for the finalised trip).

SUMMARY:Mon 12 Feb 2024 EXTRA Pool Session (General Training)
DESCRIPTION:We had expected to be delivering a training session for a local youth group next Monday (half-term)\, but they can’t (all) make it\, so we will have spaces for anyone interested in attending an ‘extra’ training session (with at least some coaching available). We have to pay for the pool anyway now\, so it would be good to have a few members along to help cover costs! Usual time\, place and ticket process (e-mail Steve if it says it’s sold out).
