DESCRIPTION:Apologies for the short notice\, but please ‘get tickets’ (or e-mail Steve with expressions of interest) ASAP\, he’ll aim to decide on Wednesday evening what we can actually offer next Monday. Thanks! \n\n\n\nFor our first Monday evening outdoor foray on the river at Brecon Promenade after Easter we hope to offer: \n\n\n\n\n‘social paddling’  – come along and join us for a gentle paddle\, probably to the rapids and back;\n\n\n\nskills training for our polo squad (if enough of them want to come) – boat handling\, fitness and ball skills (and maybe some game-play!); and\n\n\n\npersonal coaching (very limited numbers\, depending on coach availability\, will run alongside the social paddle).\n\n\n\n\nDetails for subsequent weeks to follow in due course… \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue\n\n\n\nBrecon Promenade – meet by the Club’s store adjacent to the toilet block in the ‘upper’ car park (https://what3words.com/tigers.loitering.bandage) – NOT in the car park next to the river / boathouse (although some of us might end up operating from there). \n\n\n\nTimes\n\n\n\nMeet at 6.30pm\, ready in your paddling clothes. We want to have everyone kitted-up and getting on the water by 7pm\, so late arrival has quite a disruptive effect! \n\n\n\nWe’ll aim to be getting off the water around 8.30pm\, before it gets dark. \n\n\n\nParents or other adults must be available at the start and end of the session to help under-18s with kit and to carry boats; and throughout the session in case they need to get off the water early. \n\n\n\nFacilities\n\n\n\nThere are no indoor changing facilities on site\, so it’s a case of changing in the car park. Disabled (and maybe other) toilet/s should be open but cost 20p to get in. \n\n\n\nCost\n\n\n\n\nNo cost for social paddle or polo skills if you bring your own boat & kit (although donations welcomed to help us cover costs).\n\n\n\n£5 to hire club kayak & kit for social paddle or polo skills (canoes & SUPs may also be available for some sessions at additional cost).\n\n\n\n£10 for personal coaching – to be confirmed once we know availability (same cost for own or hired kit).\n\n\n\nAll existing Club members must also have up-to-date membership of both the Club and Paddle Cymru and have signed-up to our Club Code of Conduct – we’ll send separate reminders for those of you who need these! Any new members will need to join formally after their first three sessions.\n\n\n\n\nEquipment and Clothing\n\n\n\nDon’t forget a towel and complete change of clothes for the end of the session\, in case you do fall in!! \n\n\n\nWe’ll provide boats\, paddles\, buoyancy aids\, helmets and spray-decks for those who need them – but if you have your own\, please bring them along \n\n\n\nAlthough deliberate immersion isn’t always part of the plan (and even when it is\, it’s usually towards the end of the session) there’s always a chance of accidental capsize\, so kit should take account of this (and the general weather conditions). \n\n\n\nAt the very least\, wear clothing layers of the type you might wear to go walking – ideally synthetic materials that stay warm and don’t get too heavy when wet. Most people wear swimwear underneath. And a waterproof jacket (to keep off the rain and wind\, rather than keep you dry if you capsize!) – we do have a limited number of canoeing cagoules\, but not enough of the right sizes for everyone. \n\n\n\nFootwear that you don’t mind getting wet\, not too large (chunky trainers don’t fit well in kayaks; neoprene wet-shoes are ideal; sandals or crocs no good as they fall off!). \n\n\n\nIf you want to be assured of staying warmer if you fall in\, a wetsuit is the next step. Ones made specifically for paddling are called Long Johns (or Long Janes) and don’t have sleeves\, for maximum mobility (worn with e.g. rash vest beneath and/or fleece above). But a standard surfing-type ‘full’ wetsuit is also fine as a starter. Again\, we do have a very limited number of wetsuits\, which you’re welcome to check-out on the first evening in case we have one that fits you…

The course is designed for all paddlers irrespective of their chosen craft. The objective is to introduce\, explore and practise simple strategies and safe skills that can provide you with the tools to solve common paddling issues. \n\n\n\nThe Paddlesport Safety & Rescue course is a pre-requisite for the British Canoeing Awarding Body Paddlesport Instructor Award. \n\n\n\nNB we will aim to arrange a Zoom meeting one evening 7-9pm before this course to run through some of the introductory and ‘theoretical’ elements.

DESCRIPTION:This trip is specifically aimed at those ‘new’ paddlers who’ve been joining us on Monday evenings (but open to everyone else\, of course); we’re hoping more of you will be available for this one than the cancelled canal trip on the 8th! \n\n\n\nOur current intention is for a trip on the river Wye\, e.g. from Glasbury to Hay\, although we may revert to a section of the beautiful Monmouthshire & Brecon canal if that better suits those who want to come. Shared transport could be arranged from Brecon. \n\n\n\nTiming to be confirmed\, but likely to be 10am to 3pm (maybe followed by a social gathering in pub / café). Bring packed lunch; and dress for the weather! \n\n\n\nPlease ‘get tickets’ in the usual way by midnight Wed 18 Jun. There’s no charge if you’ve joined our Learn to Paddle course\, nor if you have your own craft; but £10 fee to hire club boats; and maybe a small boat-launch / parking fee. More details from Steve or via his website (‘more info’ button below). \n\n\n\nThe perfect course for anyone aged 14 or over wanting to take their first steps into leading or coaching sessions in kayaks\, canoes or SUPs! \n\n\n\nParticipants need to: \n\n\n\n\nbe Full Members of Paddle Cymru / Paddle UK (etc.);\n\n\n\nregister for the Award with Paddle Cymru / Paddle UK (etc.) – cost c.£48;\n\n\n\nhave attended a British Canoeing Awarding Body Paddlesport Safety and Rescue Training course at least 2 weeks beforehand – such as the one running on 15 Jun; and\n\n\n\nhave personal paddling (equivalent to the former 2*-level) and rescue competence in one type of craft (kayak\, open canoe\, sit on top\, or stand up paddleboard).\n\n\n\n\nThe course will take place on the River Usk at Brecon Promenade and / or the canal in Brecon\, or another local venue (depending on water conditions). \n\n\n\nNB we will aim to arrange a Zoom meeting one evening 7-9pm before this course to run through some of the introductory and ‘theoretical’ elements.

DESCRIPTION:***E-MAIL STEVE TO BOOK PLACES BY SUN 3 AUG*** \n\n\n\nWe’ve had some expressions of interest so far for this trip (Anne\, David\, Jane\, Pete) but could still do with one or two more to make it viable. The intention is a 3-day (bank holiday weekend!) trip on the Wye\, camping on route overnight on Saturday and Sunday – but participants may be able join us for one or two days if they can’t make the whole trip. The ‘purists’ among you will choose to carry all kit in their boats ‘expedition style’ while others may prefer to have their kit transported from site-to-site; likewise some may choose to be fully self-catered while others may prefer to eat at local hostelries! Paddling distances will be 18-24km per day so this is a trip that suits longer boats (touring kayaks\, canoe or SUPs – check with Steve for hire availability)\, unless you want a 3-day workout in a playboat!! Participants will need to pay camping and launch fees as well as their own food costs. We are looking at two route options\, depending on conditions and availability of campsites: \n\n\n\n\neither Glasbury to Hereford\, camping at Whitney and Byecross (near Preston-on-Wye);\n\n\n\nor Hoarwithy to Monmouth\, camping at Ross and Biblins.\n\n\n\n\nNumbers limited\, so  book (or enquire) now if you’re interested!

Deposit them by the external doors in the car park before the start of the session.\n\n\n\n\nOn Poolside\n\n\n\n\nParents are welcome on poolside to help children carry boats and get kitted-up\, also to help them empty boats if required during the session (we’ll show you how!). You might even be able to help in the water\, if this is something you’d be willing to do – in which case\, come prepared with swimwear!\n\n\n\nNo outdoor shoes on poolside please.

SUMMARY:Sun 28 Sep 2025 'Easier' White Water Skills & Safety
DESCRIPTION:This is an opportunity for some of our ‘newer’ paddlers to learn some of the fundamental skills needed to paddle safely and in-control on white water\, using the ‘easy’ grade 2 rapids at Symonds Yat – and for our more experienced paddlers who’d like to join in the fun (maybe try a canoe for a change?!). Full details will be e-mailed to participants a few days beforehand. \n\n\n\nParticipants will need to pay for parking and boat launch; bring packed lunch and appropriate clothing (expect to get wet!).
