SUMMARY:Sun 4 Jun 2023 British Canoeing Awarding Body Paddlesport Safety & Rescue Course
DESCRIPTION:This is a commercial course being run by Steve\, discounted places may be available to BCC members\, depending on numbers. More details from Steve or via his website (‘more info’ button below). \n\n\n\nThe British Canoeing Awarding Body (BCAB) Paddlesport Safety & Rescue course aims to provide paddlers with the key safety and rescue skills required to operate safely and to be able to deal with common problems in a sheltered water environment. The course is designed for all paddlers irrespective of their chosen craft. The objective is to introduce\, explore and practise simple strategies and safe skills that can provide you with the tools to solve common paddling issues. \n\n\n\nThe Paddlesport Safety & Rescue course is a pre-requisite for the British Canoeing Awarding Body Paddlesport Instructor Award. \n\n\n\nNB we will aim to arrange a Zoom meeting one evening 7-9pm before this course to run through some of the introductory and ‘theoretical’ elements – probably either Wed 24 May or Sat 3 Jun.

SUMMARY:Mon 12 Jun 2023 Summer Training
DESCRIPTION:This will be the first of our next ‘block’ of training\, for 6 sessions 12 June-17 July. \n\n\n\nWe can now confirm that we’ll have the following groups for this block of 6 sessions. We do have space for a few more – so please Buy Tickets or RSVP below (or e-mail us) if you’d like to attend the whole block or just this individual session. \n\n\n\n\nJunior ‘Learn to Kayak’ Beginners Course\, working towards the British Canoeing Paddle Discover and Paddle Safer Awards (with the option to include some ‘transferable’ canoe and/or SUP skills):\n\nFinn\, Gethyn (not 12th)\, Rhys (own kayak)\, Seth\n\n\n\n\n\nAdult ‘Learn to Kayak’ Beginners Course\, working towards the British Canoeing Paddle Discover and Paddle Safer Awards (with the option to include some ‘transferable’ canoe and/or SUP skills):\n\nAshley\, Martin (not 3 Jul)\, Paul\n\n\n\n\n\nYouth Developers\, continuing to work towards the British Canoeing Paddle Explore Award and further developing skills in kayak\, canoe and SUP:\n\nFleur\, Lauren\, Sam Ho (not 10/17 Jul) [joined when appropriate by Edith\, Natalie and any ‘graduates’ from the Beginners course]\n\n\n\n\n\nCasual Paddling\, self-led or tagging-along with another group\n\nMike B (when available)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue\n\n\n\nBrecon Promenade – meet by the Club’s store adjacent to the toilet block in the ‘upper’ car park (https://what3words.com/tigers.loitering.bandage) – NOT in the car park next to the river / boathouse (although some of us might end up operating from there). \n\n\n\nTimes\n\n\n\nMeet at 6.30pm\, ready in your paddling clothes. We want to have everyone kitted-up and getting on the water by 7pm\, so late arrival has quite a disruptive effect! \n\n\n\nWe’ll aim to be getting off the water around 8.30pm\, before it gets dark. \n\n\n\nParents or other adults must be available at the start and end of the session to help under-18s with kit and to carry boats; and throughout the session in case they need to get off the water early. \n\n\n\nFacilities\n\n\n\nThere are no indoor changing facilities on site\, so it’s a case of changing in the car park. Toilets may be open but only until 7pm – they cost 20p to get in. \n\n\n\nCost\n\n\n\n\nCourses: £36.\n\n\n\nDevelopers & Casual Paddlers:\n\nusing Club boat: £8 per session or £36 for 6 sessions booked in advance (no refunds for missed dates).\n\n\n\nusing own boat: £3 per session.\n\n\n\n\n\nWe’ll usually collect fees by Direct Debit through our membership system\, unless you make other arrangements with us (no cash!).\n\n\n\nAll existing Club members must also have up-to-date membership of both the Club and Canoe Wales – we’ll send separate reminders for those of you who need these! Any new members will need to join formally after their first three sessions.\n\n\n\n\nEquipment and Clothing\n\n\n\n\nWe’ll provide boats\, paddles\, buoyancy aids\, helmets and spray-decks for those who need them – but if you have your own\, please bring them along\n\n\n\nAlthough deliberate immersion isn’t always part of the plan (and even when it is\, it’s usually towards the end of the session) there’s always a chance of accidental capsize\, so kit should take account of this (and the general weather conditions).\n\n\n\nAt the very least\, wear clothing layers of the type you might wear to go walking – ideally synthetic materials that stay warm and don’t get too heavy when wet. Most people wear swimwear underneath. And a waterproof jacket (to keep off the rain and wind\, rather than keep you dry if you capsize!) – we do have a limited number of canoeing cagoules\, but not enough of the right sizes for everyone.\n\n\n\nFootwear that you don’t mind getting wet\, not too large (chunky trainers don’t fit well in kayaks; neoprene wet-shoes are ideal; sandals or crocs no good as they fall off!).\n\n\n\nIf you want to be assured of staying warmer if you fall in\, a wetsuit is the next step. Ones made specifically for paddling are called Long Johns (or Long Janes) and don’t have sleeves\, for maximum mobility (worn with e.g. rash vest beneath and/or fleece above). But a standard surfing-type ‘full’ wetsuit is also fine as a starter. Again\, we do have a very limited number of wetsuits\, which you’re welcome to check-out on the first evening in case we have one that fits you…\n\n\n\nDon’t forget a towel and complete change of clothes for the end of the session\, in case you do fall in!!\n\n\n\nWe’ll be sure to talk about kit on the first couple of sessions so you can get an idea of what’s out there before you commit to spending £££\, but if you do want some ideas…\n\n\n\nGood local(ish) stores to look at are Up and Under and Canoe and Kayak Store – both will offer discounts for club members on request…\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe are still trialling our new online booking process with this block of sessions\, giving you currently 3 options for booking: \n\n\n\n\nif you have one of our new website-based membership accounts (which you’ll have received a separate e-mail about)\, you can now ‘buy tickets’ direct via PayPal using the ‘tickets’ section below (you’ll be asked to login to your account – please try this out and let us know if you have any problems;\n\n\n\nor you can still use the ‘RSVP’ section below to ‘express interest’ in attending individual sessions or the whole block;\n\n\n\nor you can drop us an e-mail at mail@breconcanoeclub.org.uk to let us know you’d like to come along to one or more sessions (or if you have any questions!).\n\n\n\n\nNB our plan is to gradually extend and improve the direct online process once we know whether it works!

SUMMARY:Mon 4 Sep 2023 Pool Session (General Training)
DESCRIPTION:**Scroll down for booking process**\n\n\n\nWe can now confirm that we have enough people interested (and enough coaches available) to make our pool sessions viable next term (especially since pool hire costs have risen significantly this year). \n\n\n\nSessions will run from 7.15 to 9pm\, including a 15min ‘buffer’ at the start and finish to get equipment in and out of the pool (i.e. an hour-and-a-quarter actually in the pool). \n\n\n\nGeneral training sessions will start on Mon 4 Sep and will run on alternate weeks (excluding half-term): 4 Sep\, 18 Sep\, 2 Oct\, 16 Oct\, 6 Nov\, 20 Nov\, 4 Dec\, 18 Dec. Polo training will take place in the intervening weeks – details to follow… \n\n\n\nWe’re currently expecting the following paddlers but may still have space for more\, so please let us know ASAP if you’re interested: \n\n\n\n\nAshley (tbc)\, Anne\, Chris\, Edith\, Finn\, Fleur\, Gethyn\, Huw\, Isabel (tbc)\, Lauren\, Lee\, Mel\, Paul\, Pete J (not 4 Sep)\, Rhys\n\n\n\n\nTraining will include the following – we’ll allocate groups each week once we know what coaches are available: \n\n\n\n\n‘Wet skills’ for developing kayakers – covering capsize confidence\, recovery strokes and rescues (as well as general paddling skills and occasional games!);\n\n\n\nRolling clinics to learn\, improve or practise the art of kayak rolling; and\n\n\n\nIndependent practice\, for those who don’t need much coaching support (e.g. to practise rolling alone or in groups).\n\n\n\n\nThe cost of each session will be £13 but we are able to offer a discounted rate of £40 if you ‘block-book’ 4 sessions in advance (each half-term; no refunds for missed sessions) – and all paddlers will need to be paid-up members of the Club and of Canoe Wales (and signed-up to our NEW Club Code of Conduct). Priority spaces will be given to block-bookings. NB this discounted rate will make it difficult for us to cover our costs\, so we will also offer the option of paying the ‘full’ price even for block-booked sessions\, for those that feel able to contribute a little extra… \n\n\n\nArrival & Changing\n\n\n\n\nPlease arrive in time to be changed and ready to enter poolside for 7.15pm.\n\n\n\nPlease wear T-shirts as well as swimwear (for warmth as well as modesty!).\n\n\n\nMake your way straight to the changing rooms – there is no need to check-in at reception.\n\n\n\nPlease wait at the changing room exits before going poolside – we’ll need to be given the ‘all-clear’ that the previous group has left before we enter.\n\n\n\nFeel free to bring your own boats & paddles – as long as they’re clean. Deposit them by the external doors in the car park before the start of the session.\n\n\n\n\nOn Poolside\n\n\n\n\nParents are welcome on poolside to help children carry boats and get kitted-up\, also to help them empty boats if required during the session (we’ll show you how!). You might even be able to help in the water\, if this is something you’d be willing to do – in which case\, come prepared with swimwear!\n\n\n\nNo outdoor shoes on poolside please.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooking Process\n\n\n\nTo confirm places\, please use the ‘get tickets’ button at the bottom of the events listing: \n\n\n\n\nYou will be asked to login to your membership account on our website. SUMMARY:Mon 11 Sep 2023 Pool Session (Polo Training)
DESCRIPTION:Canoe Polo training sessions will start on Mon 11 Sep and will run on alternate weeks (excluding half-term): 11 Sep\, 25 Sep\, 9 Oct\, 23 Oct\, 13 Nov\, 27 Nov\, 11 Dec. \n\n\n\nSessions will run from 7.15 to 9pm\, including a 15min ‘buffer’ at the start and finish to get equipment in and out of the pool (i.e. an hour-and-a-quarter actually in the pool). \n\n\n\nWe’re currently expecting the following players but may still have space for more\, so please let us know ASAP if you’re interested (i.e. if you’re not on the list below\, please don’t ‘get tickets’ without checking with us first) – NB those in bold have already paid – thanks!: \n\n\n\n\nChris\, Dave\, Edith\, Huw\, Mike S (dates tbc)\, Natalie\, Pete M\, Sam C\, Sam H\, Steve R\n\n\n\n\nThe cost of each session will be £13 but we are able to offer a discounted rate of £40 if you ‘block-book’ 4 sessions in advance (each half-term; no refunds for missed sessions) – and all paddlers will need to be paid-up members of the Club and of Canoe Wales (and signed-up to our NEW Club Code of Conduct). Priority spaces will be given to block-bookings. NB this discounted rate will make it difficult for us to cover our costs\, so we will also offer the option of paying the ‘full’ price even for block-booked sessions\, for those that feel able to contribute a little extra… \n\n\n\nArrival & Changing\n\n\n\n\nPlease arrive in time to be changed and ready to enter poolside for 7.15pm.\n\n\n\nPlease wear T-shirts as well as swimwear (for warmth as well as modesty!).\n\n\n\nMake your way straight to the changing rooms – there is no need to check-in at reception.\n\n\n\nPlease wait in the changing rooms before going poolside – we’ll need to be given the ‘all-clear’ that the previous group has left before we enter.\n\n\n\nFeel free to bring your own boats & paddles – as long as they’re clean. SUMMARY:Sun 8 Oct 2023 'Harder' White Water Trip
DESCRIPTION:This will now be a trip to Cardiff International White Water Centre. If you’d like to join us\, please ‘get tickets’ using the links below by 5pm Tuesday 3 Oct – we’ll then book our paddlers in to the centre ‘en-masse’\, to save everyone booking individually (after which you will receive an e-mail from the centre asking you to complete an online medical form and disclaimer). Choose to attend one or both of these sessions (separate tickets needed for each): \n\n\n\n\n10:00-12:30 running at 4 cumecs (10:00-11:30) then 6 cumecs (11:30-12:30)\n\n\n\n13:30-16:00 running at 8 cumecs – suitable only for those paddlers already comfortable on the course at 6 cumecs\n\n\n\n\nThis trip is for existing white water paddlers only\, if you’re not sure of your suitability please check first with Steve (and/or check out the information at Park & Play (ciww.com)). We will be able to lead and/or coach those who need or want this\, others (over 18) may choose to ‘peer paddle’ under their own steam (and under 18s if their parents are also present). \n\n\n\nWe’ll aim to coordinate transport sharing once we know who’s coming… \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis will be the first of our ‘harder’ white water trips this winter – suitable only for experienced white-water paddlers who are comfortable on grade 2(3)\, preferably able to roll\, and ready to move up to something ‘harder’. \n\n\n\nThe aim is for these trips to be on a variety of grade 3-4 rivers\, led by a suitably qualified leader / coach\, although we will not be able to confirm locations until a few days beforehand\, when we have an idea of expected water levels. \n\n\n\nConsequently\, participants should be prepared to travel up to 3 hours each way (although we’ll aim for less than this) – and to share lifts and costs. \n\n\n\nNumbers will be limited\, so if you’d like to join this trip\, please RSVP using the button below or drop Steve an e-mail. Club boats will be available for £10 hire as usual\, although we anticipate most of our ‘hard’ paddlers having their own boats.

SUMMARY:Sun 22 Oct 2023 'Easier' White Water Trip (with optional training elements for 'Introduction to WW Safety' and 'White Water' Awards)
DESCRIPTION:This will be the first of our ‘easier’ white water trips this winter\, aimed at our less-experienced paddlers who would like to gain white water skills and experience\, while also suitable for existing white water paddlers who just want to get out on the water! \n\n\n\nThese trips will be suitable for anyone aged 14+ who can paddle at least 5km under control on a moving river\, who is confident capsizing\, and who has the stamina and clothing for cold water paddling! \n\n\n\nThe aim is for these trips to get progressively harder throughout the winter\, starting on ‘gentle’ grade 1-2 rivers (possibly with the odd grade 3 section that can be walked-around) and moving up to more demanding grade 2 rivers with sections of grade 3 (which can all be walked-around) – with appropriate coaching to help everyone develop their skills and confidence. Most of the trips will be in South Wales\, although at least one of the later ones is likely to be further afield. \n\n\n\nVenues will be decided nearer the time – once we know who’s coming and have an idea of water conditions. Timings are likely to be 0930-1500 (or thereabouts) ‘at the river’. \n\n\n\nWe are intending to include on this trip (if there is sufficient demand) training towards: \n\n\n\n\nthe new Introduction to White Water Safety course\, which is “designed to support paddlers [in kayak or canoe] to become effective group members in a moderate white water (grade 2) environment; suitable for anyone starting out on their white water paddling journey\, wanting to explore the role of an effective group member and learn simple strategies and safe skills that can provide the tools to solve common paddling issues” (see Introduction to White Water Safety (britishcanoeingawarding.org.uk) for more detail). The remaining elements of this course will be covered on the following 2 ‘easier’ trips – on 26 Nov and 24 Dec (although we could move this to 17 Dec if that worked better for everyone) – and candidates will need to attend all 3 trips to complete the award. NB there is a registration fee of £25 for this course (in addition to craft hire\, if required)\, to cover certification costs – and participants on this course may have an earlier start and/or later finish than those just wishing to ‘run the river’.\n\n\n\nthe White Water Award\, which is “designed to develop your ability to apply appropriate decision-making skills for a safe day out white water paddling [in kayaks on rivers up to grade 2]” (see 01112018BCABWhiteWaterAwardV1-1Nov21.pdf for detail). Training towards this award will continue throughout the winter’s ‘easier’ trips (alongside rolling clinics in the pool!) and candidates can choose to be assessed when they feel ready (you do need to be able to roll\, on flat water!). NB there is a registration fee of £25 for anyone choosing to be assessed for this award\, to cover certification costs; this can be paid later\, but anyone registering now will have a priority place on trips.\n\n\n\n\nBook places NOW using the ‘get tickets’ and ‘RSVP’ links. Places will be strictly limited and priority will be given to (a) candidates registering for the IWWS course; and (b) the WWA course (you can book for one or both!); followed by (b) other ‘less-experienced’ paddlers (especially those who’ve already expressed an informal interest to Steve); then (c) experienced white-water paddlers. For this reason\, places will be released by ‘drip-feed’\, so if the trip appears to be ‘full’ or ‘closed’\, do check with Steve in case he’s keeping places up his sleeve! Also\, if you’re not sure whether this trip – or the course(s) – are suitable for you\, please check with Steve before booking.

We are currently taking bookings for: \n\n\n\n\n3-session block-booking for ‘independent practice’\, for those who don’t need much coaching support (e.g. to practise rolling alone or in groups) – no specific limit on numbers;\n\n\n\n3-session block-booking for ‘rolling clinics’ to learn\, improve or practise the art of kayak rolling (for teenagers & adults) – numbers limited by coach availability; and\n\n\n\nExpressions of interest for ‘skills for developing kayakers’ (those aged 11-14; and other ‘novice’ paddlers) – whether this runs will depend on coach availability and numbers in the other groups\, so we can’t guarantee spaces at this stage and may have to disappoint some of you – sorry!\n\n\n\n\nIf you’re not sure where you ‘fit’\, either use the RSVP button to ‘express interest’\, or drop us an e-mail and we’ll confirm in due course… \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur next block of general training sessions will start on Mon 6 Nov and will run on alternate weeks: 6 Nov\, 20 Nov\, 4 Dec. Polo training will take place in the intervening weeks; and the scheduled session on 18 Dec is likely to be a ‘special’ session for an invited group – details to follow… \n\n\n\nSessions will run from 7.15 to 9pm\, including a 15min ‘buffer’ at the start and finish to get equipment in and out of the pool (i.e. an hour-and-a-quarter actually in the pool). \n\n\n\nWe’re currently expecting the following paddlers (those in Bold have paid!) AND NOW HAVE NO SPACE FOR MORE: \n\n\n\n\nYouth Development (led by Dave): Asher\, Finn\, Gethyn\, Lily\, Rhys\, Seth\n\n\n\nRolling Clinic (led by Steve R\, Tanya and Pete M TBC): Edith\, Fleur\, Jonathan\, Lauren\, Lee\, Mel\, Nairi\, Natalie\, Sam C\, Sarah – we will split into smaller groups and will endeavour to give coaching support to everyone – with those most in need getting the most support and others practising together in small groups where appropriate\n\n\n\nIndependent practice: Mike B \n\n\n\n\nThe cost of each session will be £13 but we are able to offer a discounted rate of £30 if you ‘block-book’ 3 sessions in advance (no refunds for missed sessions) – and all paddlers will need to be paid-up members of the Club and of Canoe Wales (and signed-up to our NEW Club Code of Conduct). All our paid-up members should have received an e-mail explaining how to do this\, but if you’re not sure of your login details (or aren’t yet a paid-up member)\, please drop us an email…\n\n\n\nIf the system says there are no tickets available of the type you want\, please drop us an e-mail as we might be able to release more\n\n\n\nYou can at present pay only by card via a PayPal ‘gateway’. If this doesn’t work for you\, please drop us an e-mail and we’ll find a workaround for other payment methods (with apologies for any inconvenience)

SUMMARY:Sun 26 Nov 2023 'Easier' White Water Trip
DESCRIPTION:Already booked by virtue of registering for IWWS course: MelCurrently registered for WWA assessment in due course: Lee\, MelPlaces confirmed for: Anne\, Chris\, Mel\, Pete M\, Phil H\, Sam C\, Simon\, Steve R \n\n\n\nThis will be the second of our ‘easier’ white water trips this winter\, aimed at our less-experienced paddlers who would like to gain white water skills and experience\, while also suitable for existing white water paddlers who just want to get out on the water (other provisional dates are 24 Dec\, 28 Jan\, 25 Feb\, 24 Mar – although some of these may change\, dependent on dates of polo tournaments yet to be confirmed). \n\n\n\nWe are intending to include on this trip training towards: \n\n\n\n\nthe new Introduction to White Water Safety course – if you completed our ‘swimming practice’ on the 22 Oct trip and can attend on 26 Nov and 24 Dec\, it’s not too late to ‘get a ticket’ to register for this award…\n\n\n\nthe White Water Award\, which is “designed to develop your ability to apply appropriate decision-making skills for a safe day out white water paddling [in kayaks on rivers up to grade 2]” (see 01112018BCABWhiteWaterAwardV1-1Nov21.pdf for detail).
