DESCRIPTION:The final plan for this trip will depend on weather\, river conditions and participants: \nPlan A: Brynich to Brynich on canal and river – a chance for us to all warm-up and remind ourselves how to paddle\, starting on the canal from Brynich to Brecon then back to Brynich on the Usk\, with some easy white-water suitable for competent paddlers with some moving water experience. \nPlan B: Grade 2-3 White Water on the Usk or Wye – only if everyone who wants to come is happy to go straight to some moderate white water! \nPlan C: Usk Reservoir tour – only if the rivers are too high to paddle and it’s not too windy! \nTiming is most likely 9.30am-3pm\, although we won’t finalise this until we know who’s coming and where we’re going! \nPaddlers will need their own transport to and from the start and finish points – and clothing suitable for the conditions as well as packed lunch / snacks / drinks and hand sanitiser! DESCRIPTION:NB this is an ‘external’ course run by Steve Rayner in his capacity as a professional coach. However\, it is an opportunity for club members to get some formal training and an opportunity to be assessed for the British Canoeing White Water Award (similar to the previous 3* White Water Kayak Award). Normally £150 for the 2-day course\, this will be available for the bargain price of £50 for Brecon Canoe Club Members – visit https://steverayner.me.uk/event/british-canoeing-white-water-award for more details and booking. \nThe White Water Award is designed to develop your ability to apply appropriate decision making skills for a safe day out white water paddling in a kayak. It endorses your skill\, judgment and decision making to ensure a successful day on rivers up to grade 2. You will be confident in planning and undertaking journeys on moving water with proficient skills to be in control throughout. Your award should be seen as a sound basis for building the experience and knowledge associated with Progressive White Water Award holders. \nThe amount of training required for the White Water Award depends on prior experience; but as a guideline\, participants should expect to spend two days honing their skills\, with either ‘continual assessment’ or a separate half- or one-day assessment. \nThis 2-day course is intended to provide training tailored to the individual needs of participants and\, for those who meet the require standard\, an opportunity for assessment for this Award. You should already be an experienced and confident flat-water paddler before attending the course\, ideally with some moving or white-water experience.

DESCRIPTION:Based on the interest expressed in our survey\, we’re pleased to confirm that we are intending to go ahead with a block of 3 training sessions for existing paddlers aged under-18\, starting Wednesday 21st April (delayed from 14th): \n\n\n\nWe’re currently expecting to be joined by Alex\, Charlotte\, Edith\, Griff\, Jim and Rhiannon – and possibly Ruan.Cost £10 per session\, preferably paid £30 at once for all three sessions – we’ll collect this by Direct Debit through our membership system.Please contact the organiser or reply to this e-mail to book place(s); or  if you have any questions.All existing Club members must also have up-to-date membership of both the Club and Canoe Wales – we’ll send separate reminders for those of you who need these! Any new members will need to register with us but don’t need to join formally for this first block of sessions.Meet at Brecon Promenade (the Upper Car Park\, by the toilet block) at 6.30pm; we’ll be finished by 9pm (or earlier\, when it gets dark!).Parents or other household members must be available at the start and end of the session to help youngsters with kit and to carry boats; and throughout the session in case they need to get off the water early – but must avoid gathering together and must remain socially-distanced from  everyone other than their own children.Feel free to bring your own boats and paddles if you have them\, otherwise we’ll have the usual selection of club equipment available.Please be prepared for the weather and water conditions – wear a wetsuit or layers of synthetic material (e.g. fleece) – we can provide cagoules – and shoes that you don’t mind getting wet (neoprene beach shoes or gym shoes / daps are ideal); and bring a towel and full set of clothes for the end of the session.Changing will be in the car park; and we aren’t able to confirm whether the toilet block will be open (free entry for the time being\, if it is open!).We will be following additional procedures to prevent the transmission of Covid\, as set out in the attached document\, and will expect everyone to comply with instructions from coaches. DESCRIPTION:Pool session for: \n\n\n\npaddlers who can confidently rescue themselves in the pool and want to practice rolling\, Eskimo rescues and/or support strokes; andtwo or more paddlers from the same household who want to practise rescuing each other.\n\n\n\nNB because of social distancing restrictions\, we can only provide limited coaching support for these activities\, from 2m distance; and not hands-on support as we have done previously. Under-18s should therefore have the support of a parent poolside (or in the water\, if they know what they’re doing!) \n\n\n\nIf you’re interested in coming\, please e-mail us as soon as possible to let us know what you’d like to do in the session\, so we can plan accordingly. \n\n\n\nProcedures for using the pool with Covid precautions\n\n\n\nArrive as ready-to-go as possible (swim kit underneath clothes)Drop-off your own boats / paddles by the external pool door prior to going into the building (we’ll have done the same with Club kit); take other kit (spray-decks\, helmets\, etc.) in with youWait until 5min before the start of the session to go into the building (2.55pm)Wear a mask inside the building\, follow the signs and maintain 2m social distance from everyone except your own householdCheck with reception that it’s OK to proceed to the changing roomsChange as quickly as possible\, maintaining social distance from other users – keep your masks on as much as possibleWait until we’re given the go-ahead before moving onto poolside.When you leave the changing rooms to go poolside\, turn right and head straight to the external door to collect your boats / paddles; then continue anti-clockwise around the pool until you find a space\, 2m away from everyone else\, where you can get kitted-up\, adjust boats\, etc. Keep 2m away from others throughout this whole process – and keep masks on if possible.Launch when you’re ready – you can take masks off now!Helmets to be worn in the pool\, pleaseKeep 2m away from others throughout the session\, with the following exceptions:you may work closely with other household members\, who could be either in boats\, on the water or poolside; oryou may practice Eskimo rescues (where the distance between rescuer and rescuee may be less than 2m) BUT should try not to face each other directly and should limit the total time spent doing this to 30s throughout the session; orin an emergency we may all perform whatever rescues are necessary to save life.You will need to be self-sufficient or rely on household members for all rescues (other than genuine emergencies) – including emptying your own boatsIf you need / want any coaching\, please ask – but we’ll only be able to coach from 2m distance!At the end of the session\, we need to clear the building within 15min (by 4.45pm) – reversing the procedure used at the start:Find a space 2m from everyone else when you get out of the pool\, empty your boat and take kit off as quickly as possibleTake boats / paddles back to the external door by walking clockwise around the pool\, keeping 2m away from everyone else (and wearing masks again if possible) – follow the ‘queue’ with the people closest to the door moving first. Keep spray-decks\, helmets etc. with you (you can hang onto Club kit until the next time we see you)After dropping your boats / paddles outside\, return clockwise to the changing rooms – and change as quickly as possible maintaining social distance from other users – keep your masks on as much as possibleDon’t forget to collect your own boats / paddles before you leave!

DESCRIPTION:This will be a there-and-back trip (to avoid the need for car shuttles) with a snack-break at the half-way point\, starting from Brecon Canal Basin (by Theatr Brycheiniog) and heading to Brynich (or as far as we have the time and energy for!). Suitable for anyone who can keep paddling in a straight-ish line for a couple of hours! \n\n\n\nBring snacks and drinks and dress for the weather! \n\n\n\nCost will be £8 per person for boat hire (free if you have your own boats)\, plus the cost of parking at Theatr Brycheiniog in Brecon. \n\n\n\nPlaces will be limited\, so if you’re interested in joining us\, please RSVP (using the button below or to mail@breconcanoeclub.org.uk) by 6pm Wednesday 5 May (so we can make sure we have enough boats and leaders available).
